Community Borrowers
Who is a community borrower?
A community borrower is someone 18 years old or older who lives in Nevada and who is not a student or member of the faculty or staff of the University and Community College System of Nevada. Information for out-of-state residents.
You need a Library card to borrow materials from any UNR Library
How do Nevada residents apply for a card?
- Fill out a community borrower registration form at the circulation desk of the Main Library or any branch library.
- Pay a $25.00 per year non-refundable fee.
Note: The annual fee is waived for University of Nevada, Reno Alumni, members of the Friends of the University Library, and state and federal employees whose offices are located on the UNR campus. However, these groups are subject to the same restrictions and privileges as other Community Borrowers who must pay the annual fee. - A Nevada driver's license or an official Nevada identification card are required for identification. Either may be obtained from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, Driver's License Division.
How long does it take to receive a borrower's card?
- A University of Nevada library card will be issued at the time of request or once all the necessary information is provided.
- Applicants denied borrowing privileges will be refunded their $25.00.
- Until receipt of the card, materials must be used in the library.
What if your address changes?
- It is the responsibility of the borrower to keep the library informed of his or her current address and e-mail. A borrower who may be absent from this address for more than two weeks must insure that materials due the library are returned.
Can you use your Washoe County library card or other Nevada library card?
- No, you will need to fill out a community borrower registration form so that we can enter information about you into the library's circulation system. You will also need to show a Nevada driver's license or an official Nevada identification card, pay the $25.00 per year non-refundable fee, and wait for your library card to be mailed to you.
How do you check out a book?
- Present your library card and the books you want to check out at the circulation desk.
- A borrower is responsible for all materials checked out on his or her library card until those materials are returned to any UNR library.
How many books may be checked out?
- You may have up to ten books checked out at one time.
Can journals be checked out?
- Journals in Getchell Library cannot be checked out by community borrowers.
- DeLaMare Library, Life and Health Sciences Library, BGIC, and Savitt Medical Library journals circulate for three days. DeLaMare Library's unbound journals do not circulate.
How long is the loan period?
- Books are checked out for 28 days. Books located at the Reserve Desk have been set aside by faculty for class work. These can be checked out for limited periods of time.
Can books be renewed?
- Books may be renewed by accessing your library account on the Web, by telephone, or in person. You may renew a book as long as no one else has requested the book.
What if you cannot find the book you need on the shelf or the online catalog indicates the book you need is checked out?
- We will search, place a hold, or recall a book for you. This service may be requested at any library's circulation desk; such requests cannot be made by telephone. A search can take up to a week to process.
- All books are subject to recall if another borrower or the Reserve Desk supervisor requests the book. If a book has been recalled, it must be returned no later than the date printed on the recall notice. The date on the recall notice supersedes the original due date.
- A borrower who may be absent from the area for more than one week must insure that material due the library or recalled by the library during such absences is returned in accordance with library policies.
What is the fine for an overdue book and what happens if you lose a book?
- All books are due as marked. One overdue notice will be sent through
the mail. The next notice will be a bill for the cost of replacing the
book plus a $10.00 processing fee and a $5.00 billing fee. Failure to
receive a notice, for whatever reason, does not remove the
responsibility for charges. Your borrowing privileges are suspended when
you have accrued charges of $5.00 or more. The fine for an overdue
recalled book is $.25 per day, to a maximum of $5.00 per book.
How Out-of-State Residents May Obtain a Community Borrower Library Card
- Fill out an out-of-state community borrower registration form at the circulation desk of the Main Library or any branch library.
- Show a photo identification card to establish your identity
- Pay a $50.00 per year non-refundable fee.
All restrictions on and privileges of Nevada residents receiving a community borrower library card apply to non-Nevada persons receiving a community borrower library card.
How long does it take to receive a borrower's card?
- A University of Nevada library card will be issued at the time of request or once all the necessary information is provided.
- Applicants denied borrowing privileges will be refunded their $50.00.
- Until receipt of the card, materials must be used in the library.
