Guidelines for Electronic Course Reserves
What materials can be placed on electronic reserve?
Articles, book chapters, Web page links, syllabi, handouts, homework solutions, class notes, and other materials can be placed on electronic reserve. Links to electronically available resources, including journal articles and abstracts, will be made when ever possible.
How does copyright affect electronic reserves at UNR?
The University Libraries will attempt to obtain permission to use the requested materials for electronic reserves when necessary, including out-of-print titles. The Libraries pay all the royalty fees incurred for this service. When permission is not granted by the copyright holder, other arrangements may need to be made, e.g., purchasing additional print copies of books, placing journal volumes on reserve in the library, or getting electronic book access. When permission is granted, it will be for one-time-use and subsequent use will need to be re-requested. Copyrighted materials will be removed from electronic reserves at the end of each semester.
Are there limitations to the amount of royalty fees the Libraries are able to pay?
The Libraries will pay up to $30 per student for a class and/or up to $500 per item. Rare exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Libraries.
How are electronic reserve requests submitted?
Reserve requests are best submitted using the online request form located at http://0-reserves.library.unr.edu.innopac.library.unr.edu/reserves.html . In most cases, the Libraries will scan from materials owned here. When the instructor has locally produced materials, such as solutions, class notes, etc., those materials can be delivered to the appropriate circulation desk to be scanned. Instructors can indicate that they will be delivering the materials on the online request form. For uniformity (quality, size, etc.) of images, the Libraries prefer to make the photocopies, if necessary, and do the scanning.
How far in advance does the request need to be made?
Sufficient time is necessary for retrieving, copying, scanning, obtaining permission, and linking the electronic reserves. Two weeks may be necessary at the start of semesters, sometimes more if permission to use is not obtained. Additional readings throughout the term are more than welcome and should be available on the Web within a day or two of requests.
