Library Service Policy
The University Libraries endeavor to provide assistance and instruction which lead users to independent research, regardless of their ability. Though staff limitations make extensive individual assistance impossible, every effort will be made to assist users with reasonable requests to obtain needed information.
Library & Campus Services
Students with disabilities who require extensive assistance should contact the Disability Resource Center in the Thompson Building, 784-6000. It may be necessary to schedule appointments for services provided by this office.
Other library users may be able to obtain assistance by contacting the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living (353-3599 voice or TDD), or the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Nevada State Library (voice 687-5154, TDD 687-8338 or toll free from Nevada 800-922-9334.
Library Resources
- All UNR libraries have wheelchair accessible tables and computer workstations
- The Main Reference Department in Getchell Library has a Large Print Reader
- Outside book returns are available on the northwest corner of the Getchell Library building (adjacent to the parking lot) and in the breezeway at the south end of the Fleischmann Agriculture Building. A book return at the front of Getchell Library is available for use when the library is closed.
- A free campus telephone is available in Getchell Library near the Circulation Desk
- A wheelchair accessible photocopier is available adjacent to the Getchell Library Circulation Desk
- Reduction and enlargement are available on all library photocopiers at no additional cost
- Wheelchair accessible public telephones are available in the lobby of Getchell Library. Persons with disabilities may request assistance using telephones at the Service Desk of any branch library.
- Books on CD and CD players are available in the Multimedia Center on Lower Level 2 of Getchell Library.
- A closed-caption video decoder is available in the Learning Lab for previewing closed-captioned video programs
- Braille number designations are posted on elevator panels
- Assistance in retrieving library materials for persons with disabilities is dependent upon staff availability
- Circulation personnel in Getchell Library and other departments and branch libraries will assist users in checking out and renewing materials.
- Depending on availability, Circulation personnel will assist disabled users with retrieval and photocopying of materials
- Renewal of library materials by telephone is available. Dial 682-5625. Have your NSHE library card and the books to be renewed with you when placing the call
- Collection Maintenance staff will assist users in finding and retrieving materials from the stacks, as time and staffing permit
Access to Getchell Library
There is a ramp on the west side of Getchell Library. The far right door of the main entrance, on the south side of the building, has a push-plate for wheelchair access.
Access to the Branch Libraries
Ramps, elevators or lifts provide access to the branch libraries. Specific directions for disabled access may be obtained by calling the branch needed or by using the Disabled Accessibility Map, available at public service desks. [Note: Branch library hours do not necessarily match those of Getchell Library.]
